Along with being a great place for getting out onto the moors or relaxing to the sight of the stunning scenery of the North York Moors National Park, Goathland serves as an excellent base for exploring other areas of North Yorkshire, especially during longer stays.
To the west, York is around an hour's drive, with the market town of Malton approx 40 minutes from Goathland. The award-winning museum at Eden Camp is situated on the outskirts of Malton, with the route from Goathland passing through either Pickering or Thornton Dale - both of which are within 25 minutes of Goathland.
To the east of Goathland, the Yorkshire coastline offers many possibilities for either full day trips, or shorter visits. Sandwiched betweeen Whitby and Scarborough, England's North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast is home to a number of small towns and villages with their own unique character such as Robin Hood's Bay and Ravenscar.
North of Whitby, the picturesque harbour town of Staithes is popular among tourists, and just one of the many places that are equally worthy of a visit.
While the rural nature of the region demands that most locations require private transportation, the NYMR provides journeys from Goathland to Whitby and Pickering. Coastline also operate a bus service between Malton and Whitby that passes through Goathland and was named as Britain's most scenic bus route. However, services are infrequent so please consult full timetables ahead of any planned journey.
